A few weeks ago, one of my customers requested a very specific type of visualization in their Power BI report. As Power BI users, we’re fortunate to have a rich gallery of visuals available (who doesn’t love the Fish Tank chart?), but every so often, we encounter a challenge that the default visuals just can’t solve. This was one of those cases.
After some research, I stumbled upon Deneb, and that discovery quickly turned into a deep dive—countless hours experimenting with its endless possibilities.
Deneb is a custom visual for Power BI that enables highly tailored and advanced visualizations using Vega and Vega-Lite, two declarative languages for defining charts. It provides a level of flexibility and control that standard visuals simply can’t match.
To put Deneb to the test, I built my own dashboard using data from Hagstofa (Iceland’s Statistics Office) and customized some of the visualizations readily available online. Make sure you don’t miss out the rotating globe with selectors (that’s an original!) and the adaptation of Andrzej’s Population Pyramid!

If you’re ready to give it a try, there’s plenty of material available online to get you started. However, feel free to reach out if you’d like to learn more or if you need help creating some stunning visuals with Deneb!
